The Key To A Great Summer

 

“Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.”

2 Corinthians 13:11

 

What do all these things have in common; the beach, barbecue and the bonfires – friends, fried chicken and the farmer’s tans – vacation trips and the tri-tips? They all mean it’s summer time and summer time is the time to create wonderful memories.

 

If you want to have the best summer of your life it has to start with your words. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says, “Encourage each other and build each other up.”

 

We often plan every detail of our summer, even down to where we’re going to stop and use the restroom on our road trip, but have you ever stopped to plan how you’re going to encourage someone?

 

The truth is what we say matters. You know as well as I do that it only takes one snide comment to ruin a trip, a pool party or a backyard barbecue.

 

We can make memories that last a lifetime if we make the choice to go into every activity with the drive to encourage someone and build him or her up.

 

Now this doesn’t come naturally for most of us. We are often quick to make a sarcastic comment, a cutting remark and sometimes even lose our cool. But those actions only create hurt and ruin the moment. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

 

2 Corinthians 13:11 says, “Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.”

 

If you want the God of love and peace to be with you this summer then make the choice to have the best summer ever. Choose to be encouraging. Build someone up. Say something positive and full of love.

 

Not only will you have the best summer of your life but you will never be lacking in invites. Everyone will want you around.

You’re Designed For God’s Family

 

God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

Ephesians 1:5 (NLT)

Have you ever wondered where you belong in life? You’re not alone. People all over the planet are asking the same question but there’s only one answer: You belong in God’s family.

 

God decided a long time ago to make you part of his family. Ephesians 1:5 says, “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”  (NLT)

 

God loves his family and he has done everything he could possibly do to have you as part of it. He sent his son Jesus to die on the cross for your sins. That’s how much he treasures a relationship with you.

 

Building his family is the single greatest work God is doing around the world and that family is called the church. It’s what he’s building. Jesus said, “I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18) and nothing can stop it.

 

The problem we face is our culture says church (God’s family) is irrelevant, unnecessary and outdated. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, God’s church is the only family that will last for eternity.

 

So if God decided to adopt us into his family, sent Jesus to die on the cross so we can be part of his family and nothing can stop him from building his family (the church) then the question is: why are we not making God’s family a priority in our lives?

 

You will never find or fulfill your God-given purpose outside of his family. This is where you will discover life’s true meaning. This is what you were designed for. This is where you belong.

Who Are You Becoming?

 

For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

Romans 8:29 (NLT)

 

 

We were out for brunch on Sunday and asked our server about the eggs. After telling us our options someone in our party mentioned how knowledgeable he was about eggs. He stood with pride and said, “I learned that from Arnold!” He was pretty excited to let us know he was following in the former Mr. Universe’s egg expertise.

 

We try to emulate a lot of people in life, don’t we? If we want to be better at business we look for the best businessperson we can find and try to do what they do. We do the same thing with our sports, finances, parenting… you name it! We are natural-born followers.

 

Here’s the truth, God didn’t create you to be like people because people fail. God created you to become like Jesus. Romans 8:29 says, “God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son (Jesus).” (NLT)

 

If you want to become the best you can be then you need to become like the best person to ever walk the planet.

 

No one has ever loved more, accomplished more or sacrificed more than Jesus did and no one ever will. He is the perfect example for every area in your life.

 

You can begin to become more like Jesus by letting God guide your life instead of others. Galatians 5:16 says, “Let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.”

 

When you follow God’s lead he leads you to Jesus. He knows what’s best for you. He created you to be the best, to be like Jesus.

 

So make the choice today that will move you in the direction of true success. Choose to become like Jesus. You will never be disappointed.

You Worship By Surrendering

 

“Give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” Romans 12:1-2 (NLT)

I’ve talked to a lot of people who deliberately show up late to church just so they miss the worship. This is ironic considering God created you to worship. What we often miss is that true worship is far more than music and singing on Sunday morning. True worship is a lifestyle!

 

Romans 12:1-2 says, “Give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” (NLT)

 

Do you know what that means? It means that worship is not about receiving it’s about giving. Giving your life to God.

 

We miss the boat when we enter worship with a “what’s in it for me” mentality. It’s really about surrendering to God, his plan and purpose.

 

Jesus said, “If people want to follow me, they must give up the things they want. They must be willing to give up their lives daily to follow me.” Luke 9:23 (NCV)

 

This is what true worship looks like: if you’re in business do business that honors God. If you’re a parent be a parent that honors God. If you’re an employee be an employee that honors God. It means we stop living life for ourselves and start living for God.

 

When we choose to live this way we begin to discover who we really are. Our true selves are found in worship. It’s what we were created to do.

 

If you want to get the most out of life you’re going to have to surrender to God. This is truly the way to worship him. It’s in surrendering that we find fulfillment and true happiness.

You’re An On Purpose Person

 

Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love.

Ephesians 1:4 (MSG)

 

We have a lot of accidents in life, don’t we? We get in car accidents, we spill our drinks and we even call people by accident and blame it on a “butt dial.”

 

Here’s a truth in life that we need to drive deep within our hearts – There are a lot of accidents in life but you are not one of them. God created you on purpose so that he could love you.

 

Ephesians 1:4 says “Long before he laid down the earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love.” (MSG)

 

Do you know what that means? It means you’re not an accident. God had you in mind long before your parents ever did. He was thinking about how he was going to love you and care for you. Imagine that! God created you so that you could be the focus of his love. What an honor!

 

You might feel like you’re an accident or even like your parents never really wanted you. The truth is there are a lot of accidental pregnancies and accidental parents. But there are no accidental children.

 

Do you know why? Because there are no accidents with God! He has always wanted you.

 

Isaiah 46:3-4 says, “I have carried you since you were born; I have taken care of you from your birth. Even when you are old, I will be the same. Even when your hair has turned gray, I will take care of you. I made you and will take care of you. I will carry you and save you.”(NCV)

 

Today is not the day that you need to listen to your feelings. They often lie to us and tell us we’re unwanted and worthless.

 

Instead listen to what God says. He says you are an on purpose person. You’ve been personally designed by him to be the focus of his love.

Leaving Negative Thoughts Behind

 

“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Philippians 4:8 (NLT)

 

Have you ever had a song stuck in your head? If you have you know it can be torture.

 

The same can be said for negative thoughts. In our lives it’s often the hurtful words someone said, the guilt we feel or the failures we’ve experienced that captivate our thoughts and in the end ruin our lives.

 

Our thoughts don’t even have to be true to wreak havoc in our lives. We just have to believe them.

 

The good news is you don’t have to live with those negative thoughts plaguing your mind and life anymore. If you want to leave negative thoughts behind you have to let God transform your mind.

 

Romans 12:2 says, “Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

 

Do you want to know what God’s will for you is? Well, it’s not constantly thinking about the hurts, fears and failures you’ve had in your life. Those thoughts can only hurt you as much as you allow them to.

 

God’s will is to transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.

 

The Bible tells us exactly how God wants us to think in Philippians 4:8 when it says, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

 

Now that’s a life changing thought pattern. So stop dwelling on all those things in your past. You can’t change them anyway. Start thinking God’s way. It’s the way to a better life.

Jesus Is The One Who Can Calm Your Storm

 

“When they (Jesus & Peter) climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.” Matthew 14:33

 

Life throws a lot of storms our way doesn’t it? Our relationships face them, our finances face them and even our health faces them. There’s a high chance you’re facing one right now. Storms are part of life but they don’t have to ruin it.

 

Dealing with the storms of life can often feel like rowing your boat against a typhoon wind and only having one oar.  It seems impossible.

 

The Bible tells us that on one particular day the disciples of Jesus were rowing their boat in a storm all night long. It wasn’t until about 3:00 a.m. that Jesus showed up walking on the water.

 

In seeing Jesus one of the disciples thought it would be a good idea to get out of the boat and walk to Jesus. But that didn’t work so well. He began to sink!

 

Matthew 14:30 tells us that “When [Peter] saw the strong wind and waves, he was terrified and began to sink. ‘Save me, Lord!’ he shouted.”

 

The moment we take our eyes off Jesus we put them on our problem. Once our problem becomes our focus we start sinking.

 

What storm is sinking you right now? Have you taken your eyes off of Jesus? Are you questioning why God is allowing you to go through this storm?

 

He’s allowing you to go through the storm for exactly the same reason he allowed the disciples to face it. So that you will put your eyes back on him and invite him into your boat.

 

If you want to have some calm in your storm you have to get Jesus on the boat.

 

It wasn’t until Jesus got in the boat that the storm stopped. Matthew 14:33 says, “When they (Jesus & Peter) climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.”

 

Take a moment today and invite Jesus into your boat. He’s not only the one who walks on the storm he’s the one who calms it. Let him calm yours.

What’s Easter All About?

“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

John 3:16

 

On Easter we will do a lot of giving. We will give out candy, Easter baskets full of goodies, and some of us, who are still a little weird, will give out hard boiled eggs because kids love those, right?

 

As good as our gifts will be this Easter they will never compare to what God gave us: the gift of his son. John 3:16 says, “For this is how God loved the world: he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

 

So what’s Easter all about? It’s all about God loving you. Loving you so much that he sent his son Jesus to die on the cross for you so that your sins would be forgiven and you would have a home in heaven.

 

What’s amazing about God’s love is that he loves us even when we’re messed up. Romans 5:8 says, “God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”

 

Do you know what that means? It means God doesn’t expect you to be perfect. You don’t have to fix yourself before you come to Jesus. You can just come as you are because he loves you just like you are.

 

The only thing we have to do is receive the wonderful gift of Jesus. The Bible tells us how in Romans 10:9-10 when it says, “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.” It’s that simple!

 

It doesn’t matter what you give or get in your Easter basket. Remember, the greatest gifts always come from God. He loves you that much!

How To Win The Confidence Of Others


“Reliable friends who do what they say are like cool drinks in a sweltering heat – refreshing!” (Proverbs 25:13 MSG)

 

If you want to have deep, meaningful friendships and win the confidence of others you’re going to have to be a person who keeps their promises.

 

Can you think of a time when you promised to attend a party for a friend, gave your word to a family member to be somewhere or do something on a special day only to cancel at the last minute? I know I can.

 

We’ve come to the point in our culture where our yes really means unless I get a better offer or I just decided I don’t want to do it anymore. But this mindset is ruining our relationships.

 

Jesus had to deal with this same issue when he was talking to the Jewish leaders. He told them, “Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.”  (Matthew 5:37 NLT) The problem with the Jewish leaders was the same problem we face today, they kept going back on their word.

 

When you go back on your word you’re showing those around you that you can’t be trusted and you begin to lose their confidence. If you’re going to have meaningful relationships in life you’re going to have to win the confidence of those around you.

 

How do you win the confidence of others? You can start by keeping your word.

 

Proverbs 25:13 says, “Reliable friends who do what they say are like cool drinks in a sweltering heat – refreshing” (MSG)!

 

I don’t know about you but I love a cold drink on a hot day and I love it when a friend keeps their word and does what they say they are going to do. It’s refreshing!

 

This is key to every great relationship in life. People need to be able to trust you.

 

If you become a person who keeps their word, even when it’s a sacrifice, you will begin to win the confidence of those around you and you will never be lacking in great friendships.

Who’s On The Porch?

PorchWhat would you do if you looked outside and the most important person in the universe was standing on the front porch? Most of us won’t even answer the door if it’s an unexpected guest. But what if it was Jesus?

 

Jesus said in Revelation 23:20, “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.”

 

You might not know it, you might not even like it, but Jesus has been standing at the front door of your heart for a long time. Why? Because he actually likes you. More importantly, he loves you and wants you to share your life with him.

 

The problem is we often treat him like and unwanted guest instead of an honored one. We tend to ignore him instead of inviting him in.

 

So what should we do now that we know the most important person in the universe is standing on the porch?

 

The first thing we should do is invite him in. Isn’t that what you would do with other honored guests? You wouldn’t want to be left on the porch of your friend’s house endlessly knocking, and neither does Jesus. So invite him in!

 

The next thing we should do is honor him. No one wants to go to someone’s home and be disrespected, ignored or treated as a bother and neither does Jesus! We can honor him by listening to him. Ask Jesus to speak to you and teach you his ways. Find out what he’s all about.

 

You can simply invite Jesus in from the front porch by praying something like this, “Jesus, I invite you into my heart, my home, as my honored guest. Come in and let’s spend some time together. I want to know more about you.”

 

If you do these two simple steps your relationship with Jesus will grow stronger. Just like every relationship grows stronger when you invite people inside instead of leaving them outside. Today is the day to invite Jesus in.
