You’re Talented, No Matter What You Think

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well.  If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.    Romans 12:6-8 (NLT)

I have often struggled in my life with not being really good at anything. You know the saying “jack of all trades but master of none.” Have you ever felt like you’re just not good at anything? Well, you’re not alone.

We often feel this way because we compare our talent with the talent of other people. We think that if we don’t do things the same way as others or with as much gusto we’re just not as good as they are. But that’s just simply not true.

God gave you a talent that’s unique to you and only you can use it the special way he intended.

Roman 12:6-8 says, “In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.” (NLT)

If you really sat down to think about it I’m sure you could think of something you do well. Now it’s important that we don’t confuse “well” with “the same as.” Those are two different things.

You are unique. God made you completely different and in doing so he designed you to use the gift he gave you in your own special way. Only you can use it the way you do. That’s part of God’s plan.

So what is your talent? Are you good at calling a friend to encourage them over a cup of coffee? If so, encourage your heart out.

Are you good at teaching or mentoring in your own special way? If so, then teach and instruct. The world needs you.

Are you a born leader? Do people follow you and listen to your guidance? If so, lead as Jesus did and never stop.

The bottom line is you’re talented no matter what you think. God gave you a gift and he did it for a reason. He actually wants you to use it for his glory. So do it already!

Praise Him Anyway

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.”

Habakkuk 3:17-18

Life doesn’t always go as planned, does it? Have you ever been in a situation where you plan and plan, work and work and only hit wall after wall? Been there done that and I’ll probably do it again sometime down the road.

How do you deal with these times that don’t seem to go according to plan?

You have to make a decision that when life doesn’t go your way you’re going to praise God anyway.

Habakkuk 3:17-18 says, “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. (NLT)

So what do you do when there’s no food in the fridge, you didn’t get that raise and the bills keep piling up? You praise God anyway.

Why? Because praising God has nothing to do with your circumstances and everything to do with who he is.

Do you want to know why you can’t see your way out of your problem? It’s because you keep looking at your problem and not the one who can solve your problem.

It’s only when we look to God and praise him anyway that we start to find joy and rejoicing even in our troubles. It’s when we realize how powerless we are and how powerful He is that our life problems become manageable.

So make the life transforming decision that when life doesn’t go your way you’re going to praise him anyway. Only then will you begin to experience true joy.

How To Win Friends & Keep Them

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.

Philippians 2:3 (NIV)

In ancient mythology there was once a man named Narcissus who noticed his reflection in the still of the stream. He immediately fell in love with his reflection and sat there gazing at his beauty night and day. Eventually, the slave of self-love died of thirst all alone by the stream.

If you want to win friends and keep them you have to get rid of the narcissism in your life and consider others above yourself.

Philippians 2:3 says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourself.”

Let’s be honest, we all have a little selfishness in us. But as we all know selfishness can destroy relationships faster than anything.

The first step to winning friends and keeping them is to realize that relationships are not about you. That’s why the Bible tells us to value others above ourselves.

Do you want to know how to win friends and keep them? Make it obvious to the people in your life that they are important to you. Value them! Tell them you love them because they need to hear it from your mouth. Treat them with kindness because there’s no such thing as a mean friend. Go out of your way to care for them because they need to know they’re valuable. Say nice things about them in public because that’s what friends do.

I’m sure you want all these things done for you. Why don’t you do them for others? In short, be the friend you’ve always wanted to have.

If you start living a life that really values others you will never be lacking in life-long friendships. You will begin to experience what true, godly relationships are supposed to be like.

Positive Life Change

Put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires… put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Ephesians 4:22,24

If you want to get healthy and lose weight you have to stop eating unhealthy foods and start eating healthy foods. You will never reach your health goals if you continue to eat Twinkies. You have to start eating vegetables instead. It’s the law of replacing the bad with the good.

This law applies to every area of your life, especially your spiritual life. If you want to have a positive life change and grow spiritually you have to replace bad life habits with good life habits.

Ephesians 4:22,24 says, “Put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires… put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”

This means you’ve got a choice to make because change is a choice.

It’s choosing to put off unforgiveness and put on forgiveness. Instead of being selfish make the choice to live a generous life. Instead of being lazy and living without ambition put on a solid work ethic and work as unto the Lord.

It’s easy to be an unforgiving, selfish and lazy person.  Isn’t it? In fact we are all really good at it. But you’ll never be happy in life if you don’t forgive, you’ll never be fulfilled if you’re not generous and you’ll never get anywhere in life if you don’t work hard.

You see just choosing not to do wrong isn’t enough to experience positive life change. It must go farther than that. You must choose to do right in the place of wrong.

If you make this choice not only will you experience a happier and more fulfilled life you will become the person God created you to be. You will become like him.

A Life Of Significance

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

Jeremiah 29:11

If you’re like most people you spend your days just trying to survive. You’ve probably said things like “I’ve just got to get through the day” or “Will this day ever end?”

Now I know you’ve had those bad days and, sorry to say, you will probably have a bad day or two in the future. That’s life! But just getting by is not what God has planned for you. His plan for your life goes far beyond survival. His plan is one of significance.

Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Now doesn’t that sound like a great plan?

I don’t know about you, but I want that kind of life. Don’t you? Yeah I thought so!  So how do you tap into this plan that God has for you. The very first thing you need to do is submit your life and plans to God.

Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.” Do you want to succeed in life? Then commit your plans to God.

When you commit your plans to him what you’re saying is “God I’m not so good at this life planning thing. In fact most of my plans end up in utter failure. I want to move from a life of survival to significance. I need some help. I need your help.”

If you begin to think, pray and live this way get ready – you’re in for a radical life change. You see when you give God permission to plan your life he does a really good job.

The Bible keeps no secrets about God’s designed significance for your life. The problem comes in when you keep your plans a secret from him. People often think, “Oh man this is going to be really good. I love this idea” only to leave God completely out of it. Then they wonder why they fail.

If you really want a significant life change then you have to stop leaving God out of your plan. If you really want your life to succeed you have to commit your plans to him.

The reality we all must face is that God is really the only one who knows what’s best for us. He wants you to live a life of significance.

The Key To A Great Summer

“Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.”

2 Corinthians 13:11

What do all these things have in common; the beach, barbecue and the bonfires – friends, fried chicken and the farmer’s tans – vacation trips and the tri-tips? They all mean it’s summer time and summer time is the time to create wonderful memories.

If you want to have the best summer of your life it has to start with your words. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says, “Encourage each other and build each other up.”

We often plan every detail of our summer, even down to where we’re going to stop and use the restroom on our road trip, but have you ever stopped to plan how you’re going to encourage someone?

The truth is what we say matters. You know as well as I do that it only takes one snide comment to ruin a trip, a pool party or a backyard barbecue.

We can make memories that last a lifetime if we make the choice to go into every activity with the drive to encourage someone and build him or her up.

Now this doesn’t come naturally for most of us. We are often quick to make a sarcastic comment, a cutting remark and sometimes even lose our cool. But those actions only create hurt and ruin the moment. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

2 Corinthians 13:11 says, “Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.”

If you want the God of love and peace to be with you this summer then make the choice to have the best summer ever. Choose to be encouraging. Build someone up. Say something positive and full of love.

Not only will you have the best summer of your life but you will never be lacking in invites. Everyone will want you around.

You’re Designed For God’s Family

God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

Ephesians 1:5 (NLT)

Have you ever wondered where you belong in life? You’re not alone. People all over the planet are asking the same question but there’s only one answer: You belong in God’s family.

God decided a long time ago to make you part of his family. Ephesians 1:5 says, “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”  (NLT)

God loves his family and he has done everything he could possibly do to have you as part of it. He sent his son Jesus to die on the cross for your sins. That’s how much he treasures a relationship with you.

Building his family is the single greatest work God is doing around the world and that family is called the church. It’s what he’s building. Jesus said, “I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18) and nothing can stop it.

The problem we face is our culture says church (God’s family) is irrelevant, unnecessary and outdated. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, God’s church is the only family that will last for eternity.

So if God decided to adopt us into his family, sent Jesus to die on the cross so we can be part of his family and nothing can stop him from building his family (the church) then the question is: why are we not making God’s family a priority in our lives?

You will never find or fulfill your God-given purpose outside of his family. This is where you will discover life’s true meaning. This is what you were designed for. This is where you belong.

Who Are You Becoming?

For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

Romans 8:29 (NLT)

We were out for brunch on Sunday and asked our server about the eggs. After telling us our options someone in our party mentioned how knowledgeable he was about eggs. He stood with pride and said, “I learned that from Arnold!” He was pretty excited to let us know he was following in the former Mr. Universe’s egg expertise.

We try to emulate a lot of people in life, don’t we? If we want to be better at business we look for the best businessperson we can find and try to do what they do. We do the same thing with our sports, finances, parenting… you name it! We are natural-born followers.

Here’s the truth, God didn’t create you to be like people because people fail. God created you to become like Jesus. Romans 8:29 says, “God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son (Jesus).” (NLT)

If you want to become the best you can be then you need to become like the best person to ever walk the planet.

No one has ever loved more, accomplished more or sacrificed more than Jesus did and no one ever will. He is the perfect example for every area in your life.

You can begin to become more like Jesus by letting God guide your life instead of others. Galatians 5:16 says, “Let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.”

When you follow God’s lead he leads you to Jesus. He knows what’s best for you. He created you to be the best, to be like Jesus.

So make the choice today that will move you in the direction of true success. Choose to become like Jesus. You will never be disappointed.

You Worship By Surrendering

“Give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” Romans 12:1-2 (NLT)

I’ve talked to a lot of people who deliberately show up late to church just so they miss the worship. This is ironic considering God created you to worship. What we often miss is that true worship is far more than music and singing on Sunday morning. True worship is a lifestyle!

Romans 12:1-2 says, “Give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” (NLT)

Do you know what that means? It means that worship is not about receiving it’s about giving. Giving your life to God.

We miss the boat when we enter worship with a “what’s in it for me” mentality. It’s really about surrendering to God, his plan and purpose.

Jesus said, “If people want to follow me, they must give up the things they want. They must be willing to give up their lives daily to follow me.” Luke 9:23 (NCV)

This is what true worship looks like: if you’re in business do business that honors God. If you’re a parent be a parent that honors God. If you’re an employee be an employee that honors God. It means we stop living life for ourselves and start living for God.

When we choose to live this way we begin to discover who we really are. Our true selves are found in worship. It’s what we were created to do.

If you want to get the most out of life you’re going to have to surrender to God. This is truly the way to worship him. It’s in surrendering that we find fulfillment and true happiness.

You’re An On Purpose Person

Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love.

Ephesians 1:4 (MSG)

We have a lot of accidents in life, don’t we? We get in car accidents, we spill our drinks and we even call people by accident and blame it on a “butt dial.”

Here’s a truth in life that we need to drive deep within our hearts – There are a lot of accidents in life but you are not one of them. God created you on purpose so that he could love you.

Ephesians 1:4 says “Long before he laid down the earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love.” (MSG)

Do you know what that means? It means you’re not an accident. God had you in mind long before your parents ever did. He was thinking about how he was going to love you and care for you. Imagine that! God created you so that you could be the focus of his love. What an honor!

You might feel like you’re an accident or even like your parents never really wanted you. The truth is there are a lot of accidental pregnancies and accidental parents. But there are no accidental children.

Do you know why? Because there are no accidents with God! He has always wanted you.

Isaiah 46:3-4 says, “I have carried you since you were born; I have taken care of you from your birth. Even when you are old, I will be the same. Even when your hair has turned gray, I will take care of you. I made you and will take care of you. I will carry you and save you.”(NCV)

Today is not the day that you need to listen to your feelings. They often lie to us and tell us we’re unwanted and worthless.

Instead listen to what God says. He says you are an on purpose person. You’ve been personally designed by him to be the focus of his love.
