My wife is a little obsessive compulsive when it comes to cleaning the house. It doesn’t matter what time of day or night, if she gets it in her head that the house is driving her crazy it has to be cleaned now! It’s one of the many things I love about her but, at the same time, it can also make me want to grab the kids and run to the movie theater for a couple of hours just so she doesn’t involve me in her panicked attempt to refold the towels that were mistakenly folded in halves instead of thirds by our 11 year old daughter. She gets so consumed with a project she just won’t rest until it’s done.
One time I came home to her, eight months pregnant, rearranging every piece of furniture in the house and announcing to me that we needed a new TV. This would normally be great news for me but I had just bought that one. Apparently in her zest for cleaning she decided to move the entertainment center by herself, TV and all. So she decided that the best place to put the TV that she couldn’t lift was on the couch. The place from which it fell!
As much as my lovely wife might obsess over getting the house clean there is no one that obsesses more than God obsesses over us. The Bible says “How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!” (Psalm 139:17-18)
This next year will most definitely bring many ups and downs in our lives. Just like every other year. But there is always going to be one constant. You are on God’s mind. He is thinking about you right now, obsessing over you, wanting you to know him better.
In the chaotic lives we live, full of messy houses and the wonderful wives who have to have them clean, it’s nice to know that when life gets out of control, or you’re forced to do things you really would rather not do, or your TV gets broken God is thinking loving thoughts about you. Maybe this year we should obsess over God a little more.
Happy New Year,
