A Boo Yah Christmas

A Boo Yah Christmas
“Boo Yah… level twenty two!” The boy next to me yelled out, while giving a hefty fist pump and looking at the DS in his hands. He could hardly contain his excitement and his parents could hardly contain their embarrassment for the random “loud” outburst of emotion. It was the last thing I expected to hear from a random boy passing me in the soda aisle at Albertson’s.

Later, as I remembered the boy’s pure excitement over reaching level twenty two, I thought about the shepherds when the angels came to announce the birth of Jesus. “That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”(Luke 2:8-14)

“Terrified” is probably an understatement when you think of how the shepherds must have really felt. It must have been the biggest adrenaline rush of their lives. And imagine the curiosity they must have felt over what the angels were telling them. Think for a second about what the angels said, “good news,” “great joy,” “Savior – yes, the Messiah,” “peace on earth.” In other words the angels were telling the shepherds “Boo Yah” Jesus is here! Now that’s something to get excited about.

You might get excited about a lot of things this Christmas but there is nothing more exciting than the coming of Jesus. The one who is our savior, the one who can bring peace to our lives… Let’s let the fact that Jesus came for you and for me be the real reason for our excitement this Christmas.

Merry Christmas!
